Germany´s Universities of Applied Sciences

Universities of applied sciences offer programmes in engineering, business management, social sciences and design. They differ from other universities in their more application-oriented instruction.

Undergraduate study programmes at Bavarian universities of applied sciences usually feature six theoretical semesters and one practical semester or internship. The objective is to provide students with insights into the structure, administration and operational procedures in industry, commerce, or the social or public sector.

After completing their bachelor’s degree, students with above-average grades have the possibility of obtaining a master’s degree in another two to three semesters. They can either specialise in the area of their undergraduate studies or in an interdisciplinary field. The programmes also include training in management, basic legal knowledge, foreign languages and social skills like teamwork and leadership.

The well-structured programmes offered at many universities of applied sciences have become an increasingly viable and popular alternative to programmes offered at more traditional universities. Companies appreciate the application-oriented teaching methods and practical work experience, both of which allow graduates to integrate quickly into a business or industry environment.

The objective of application-oriented higher education is to enable graduates to apply theoretical and practical knowledge to specific problems. Students systematically learn how to transfer these skills as they study and are supported by instructors who were (or still are) managers and leaders in industry and commerce.

Key elements of application-oriented instruction are:
* Lectures in small groups
* Lecturers with at least five years of industry background
* Lab exercises, tutorials, simulations, role-plays, projects and field trips
* Integrated practical semesters in commerce and industry
* Study projects, practical projects and thesis.
